An obligation is a legal bond by which one or more persons are bound towards one or more others to give, to do, or not to do something.

Consent is vitiated where it is given in error, extracted by duress, or obtained by fraud; a contract so concluded may be annulled.

A lease is a contract by which one party undertakes to make available to the other the use of a thing for a determined period in return for a price (rent). The lessor must deliver the thing in a state fit for its intended use and maintain it so throughout the lease.

Whoever intentionally kills another person shall be punished by hard labour for a term of fifteen to twenty years.

Fraud (escroquerie) is committed by anyone who, by fraudulent means or false representations, induces another to hand over money or property to their detriment, and is punishable by imprisonment and a fine.

An employer may not dismiss a worker for trade-union activity, for filing a complaint, or on grounds of sex, religion or political opinion; arbitrary dismissal entitles the worker to compensation.

The normal working period may not exceed 48 hours per week. Hours worked beyond the legal limit are overtime and must be paid at an increased rate.

Every person who, in the exercise of a profession, habitually carries out acts of commerce is a trader (commerçant) and is subject to the obligations of the commercial law.

Judgments rendered at first instance may be appealed within thirty days of notification, save where the law provides otherwise; the appeal suspends execution unless provisional enforcement is ordered.

Ownership of immovable property and rights in rem affecting it are not effective against third parties until registered in the land register.

The carrier is liable for loss of or damage to goods occurring while they are in his charge, unless he proves that the loss arose from a cause that could not be avoided by reasonable diligence.

Smuggling — the introduction or removal of goods across the customs line outside the lawful channels or in evasion of duties — constitutes a customs offence punishable by fine, confiscation and, in aggravated cases, imprisonment.

A person taken into custody must be informed of the reasons for the measure, has the right to contact a member of family and to seek the assistance of a lawyer; the period of detention without referral to the public prosecutor is strictly limited by law.
